Resolution Solution #1 – Work Out More…and Feel Good Doing It

Workin' It Out Jan 2011

Not too long ago I took a little shopping expedition to Road Runner Sports with my fabulous BFFs.  Besides being wonderful friends and brilliant people, these amazing women are simply gorgeous, seriously fit and their figures are an ongoing testament to their dedication.  So it is hardly a wonder that they are my favorite shopping companions of many years standing, my favorite folks to dress up and terrific inspiration.

We went to buy running shoes – this is THE place to find the best running shoes.  Our second objective was to introduce our friend into the wonderful world of insoles, arch supports and other handy things that make your shoes kinder and gentler – more on that in a future post.

After our feet were comfy we headed over to look at the clothing.  Now, being a master shopper, I truly enjoy shopping for other people.  In a place like Runner’s World I had no expectation of finding anything that would fit my size 3X bod, besides shoes.  So I was gleefully poring through the racks intent on finding the right Nike Dri Fit top in this stunning lipstick pink for my friend when I realized the terrific pink top in my hand was IN A SIZE 3X!!!!!   I was floored.  I checked the rack twice, it was all plus sized.  I have seen the Nike plus sized gear online and had toyed with getting some but hadn’t, assuming it would be like similar offerings from other brands, not quite right in terms of fit.  My heart leapt with joy as I tried on their modest but cool selection and found it fit, and really well at that!  And I must confess to then buying rather a lot of it.

Needless to say, the Nike folks know their stuff.  Their Dri Fit fabric is remarkable and a must-have for folks who really sweat.  Nike is always ahead with technical details like loops and holes for your ipod wires.  But I was impressed most with their plus size fit.  This is true plus size, not the annoying almost-but-actually-quite-small plus size, and their cut is spot on with give in the right places without being baggy or droopy.  They do a long running Capri pant that is comfortable, just the right length and full of terrific technical details like a back waist zipper pocket and chafe free thigh panels.  And props to Nike for selling some of the same key fitness pieces in both regular and plus sizes.  Not just a special line of frumpy plain black and white stuff for us big girls, bless their hearts.

Since this trip I have become simply addicted.  I actually have the jacket, pants and top above.  I love love love that insane electric plum color.  It was made for we brown-eyed girls and it looks great with my ASICs running shoes (also pictured).  Working out is one of the best times to feel good about yourself and how you look – and is the only time I really like the matchy-matchy thing.  I just feel more pulled together and confident.

Now Nike gear is not exactly budget oriented, regular sized women be warned.  However, for those of us accustomed to paying additional premiums for any plus sized fitness gear, the prices seem fairly in line with the better lines.  And the product is far and away ahead of the plus sized competition for the price.

So, as I go forth into a new year working on my fitness resolution, I will be doing it in style!

Psst!  A note to all on Dri Fit fabric and other fitness technology fabrics – I have heard from many that they only down side is that the fabrics tend to wear out or lose their dry properties quickly.  These fabrics do not like the dryer so the recommended care for longest life: machine wash in cold water on the hand wash or gentle cycle, then hang dry.  Upside – most of this dries in a flash.
